LOOK: Pacquiao-Floyd rematch seen to still rake in money | todaysupdateph

While critics have blasted the idea of having another rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., former Golden Boy Promotions executive Richard Schaefer believes the fight will still rake in a lot of money.

Schaefer predicts that the retired American fighter will become a big hit if he comes out of retirement.

“If Floyd would consider a return, he would be without any question be the top dog of the sport immediately. He is our generation’s G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) just like our parents and grandparents had theirs in Muhammad Ali,” he told World Boxing News.

This is why another go at Pacquiao, who also enjoys a wide following, will surely be a box office hit despite the disappointing result of their first bout, he said.

The May 2015 encounter between the two, billed as the “Fight of the Century,” failed to live up to expectations because the match, won by Mayweather, lacked the action fans were looking for.

But Schaefer believe most fans are counting on a different outcome if a rematch pushes through.

“As much everyone is complaining about a potential Mayweather vs Pacquiao II, let’s face it, we would all buy it,” said Schaefer.

The first bout generated over P$400 million from 4.4 million pay-per-view buys, eclipsing the previous record of 2.48 million PPV buys when Mayweather took on Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

“Even if the fight would do half of what the first fight did, it still would be the second largest boxing event in history from a financial standpoint,” said the boxing promoter.

“I tend to think that it would do much more than half of the first fight though and would still make both fighters a lot of money.”
