MISAMIS ORIENTAL - Despite a downpour Thursday dawn, devotees flocked to the Divine Mercy Shrine in El Salvador City to celebrate the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
At 2:00 a.m., pilgrims woke up to "Mama Mary birthday greetings" called Pamukaw to signal the start of the celebration.
After that, pilgrims paraded the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary around the shrine.
They also offered mañanita songs to the Blessed Mother which was followed by a Holy Mass presided by Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma.
This year marks the 2,032nd birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The shrine is famous for its 50-foot image of the Divine Mercy.
Members of the 58th Infantry Battalion and Provincial Public Safety Company helped El Salvador Police secure the area.
A medical team was also on standby to attend to the medical needs of pilgrims.
