PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief Ronald Dela Rosa said Tuesday that celebrities who would voluntarily present themselves to the authorities and admit their involvement in the illegal drugs will not immediately be jailed.
Dela Rosa said just like the other surrenderees in the administration's anti-illegal drugs campaign, the celebrities who used to be involved in illegal drugs will be given a chance to change.
“Kung mag-surrender sila, e ito naman usapang lalaki, kahit na identified sila na user, kung mag-surrender sila, para sa akin, they don’t deserve to be jailed. Kung mag-surrender sila, bigyan natin ng tsansang magbago yung tao,” he said.
“Tao lang tayo. I want this (anti-illegal drugs) campaign to be as humane as possible. Kaya nga umabot tayo ng 720,000 na surrenderers dahil nga sa human approach natin,” he added.
However, Dela Rosa said celebrities who would surrender will still undergo normal process where they will be interviewed, and will be asked to execute their affidavit particularly on where they get their supplies of illegal drugs.
Earlier, Dela Rosa said they will also implement Oplan Tokhang on the celebrities in the drugs watch list of President Rodrigo Duterte.
He said that these people in show business will not be treated special just because they're famous as a celebrity.
"If we are doing the Oplan Tokhang to ordinary citizens what is the difference why we cannot apply the same to people from the showbiz world?" de la Rosa said last Monday.
In the case of the celebrities, it would be a modified Oplan Tokhang where he will talk to them in group.
“Halimbawa sa isang network meron silang pito o sampu sa listahan gagawin natin doon (sa network). That is modified Tokhang, 'yung isang modification diyan ang tawag namin sa Davao ay Taphang, tapok hangyo, gather and plead. Meaning i-gather natin yung lahat ng TV personalities sa isang network, i-gather natin sa opisina nila then kausapin sila as a group,” said Dela Rosa.
“We will talk to them collectively, hindi na individually. We will tell them na you are identified, please huminto na kayo at nakakahiya kayo sa taumbayan. Idol na idol kayo ng kabataaan tapos pala gumagamit kayo ng droga. So we will try to give them advice,” he added.
