<b>MANILA, Philippines – Neophyte Senator Leila De Lima strongly denied owning millions and billions of pesos in her bank accounts, as she called her accuser and successor Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II and his men a “mafia of lies.”<br /><br />In response to Aguirre, De Lima said these allegedly questionable accounts are only fabricated to malign her.<br /><br /><i>“I have no millions or billions in my bank accounts. And I have no dummy accounts. Any alleged accounts that would be linked to me and my alleged drug links can only be fictitious,” De Lima told reporters in a text message.</i><br /><br />De Lima then slammed Aguirre for faking testimonies and evidence against her.<br /><br /><i>“Secretary Aquirre and his operators are a mafia of lies and intrigues, who go to bed with criminal convicts just to get their perjured testimonies,” she said.</i><br />It was Aguirre who said that the Anti Money Laundering Council has submitted bank documents allegedly showing that P500 million to P1 billion were transferred to De Lima’s accounts.<br /><br />Aguirre also earlier claimed that two former staff of De Lima testified against the senator and purportedly submitted bank deposit slips. The two, however, publicly denied it.<br /><br />Why allow Aguirre?<br /><br />De Lima also hit the House of Representaties for allowing Aguirre, a member of the executive, to lead a congressional inquiry.<br /><br />She questioned why Aguirre was allowed to examine the same witnesses he brought to the hearing. She pointed out such leeway was not granted to the Senate, when administration allies conducted <i>“uninhibited and grueling cross-examination” of witness Edgar Matobato.</i><br /><br />Matobato is a self-confessed hitman of the Davao Death Squad, who accused President Duterte of ordering killings when he was Davao City mayor.<br /><br /><i>“The House allows Aguirre to conduct the examination of his own witnesses, while in the Senate Matobato is subjected to uninhibited gruelling cross-examination, at times with misleading questions designed to confuse a Grade 1 dropout,” De Lima said</i>.<br /><br />De Lima is a subject of a House probe into the proliferation of illegal drugs in the national penitentiary. He reiterated that nobody pressured him to speak against De Lima and that he was surprised when the senator showed to media his text messages.</div>

"Nobody pressured or coerced me to speak against Sen. De Lima. Also being investigated are several corporations, where some of the stockholders reportedly have connections to drug lords.<br />

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II told reporters on Friday, September 23, that the NBI had received from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) the bank records that the bureau requested.<br />
<br />
Aguirre met with AMLC officials on Thursday.<br />
<br />
He refused to name De Lima’s friends whose bank transactions are being investigated.<br />
<br />
“I’m not at liberty to say something about that because that is confidential. Under the AMLC rules, the report provided to us is just to help up dig deeper for evidence, and we can only reveal this if there is already a case filed in court,” the justice secretary said.<br />
<br />
Still, he said, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has sufficient evidence to file a case against the lady senator.<br />
<br />
The DOJ has accused De Lima of tolerating drug trading inside the New Bilibid Prison when she was justice secretary, because the drug lords allegedly delivered bribe money to her through her reported driver-boyfriend Ronnie Dayan.<br />
<br />
Convicts who testified in the congressional hearing on the proliferation of drugs in the national penitentiary claimed the bribe money they paid was for De Lima’s 2016 senatorial campaign.<br />
<br />
De Lima has denied all the allegations made by the DOJ chief and the witnesses.<br />
<br />
The first time Aguirre made the allegations on Thursday that she had millions, even billions, of pesos in her bank accounts, De Lima said: “Secretary Aquirre and his operators are a mafia of lies and intrigues, who go to bed with criminal convicts just to get their perjured testimonies.” <br />

MANILA, Philippines – No one but President Rodrigo Duterte should be blamed for the Philippines’ bad image in the international community.<br /><br />This was Senator Leila de Lima's statement in her privilege speech on Tuesday, September 20, as she cried foul anew over Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s allegations that she is “misleading” international media and creating a negative image of the Philippines abroad.<div>
<br />“And may I add, the President has already proven that he is more than capable of single-handedly giving a bad image of this country to the whole world in the short span of 3 months in office. He does not need any help from anybody on that aspect, least of all from me,” De Lima said in her privilege speech.<br /><br />De Lima reiterated that the extrajudicial killings were the problem, and not herself.<br /><br />“Ang pagpatay ng mahigit 30 katao araw-araw ay pagpatay pa rin sa mata ng mundo, nandiyan man si Leila De Lima o wala,” she said.<br /><br />(The killing of more than 30 people every day is still a killing in the eyes of the world, whether or not Leila de Lima is there.)<br /><br />De Lima said this was worsened by the President's foul mouth. Duterte earlier cursed Pope Francis over the heavy traffic in the metro when he arrived in 2015. He also insulted US President Barack Obama for criticizing the human rights stance of the administration.<br /><br />Don’t twist the story<br /><br />De Lima said Duterte’s allies should not twist the story. It is clear, she said, who was at fault.<br /><br />“Kaya huwag po ninyong baligtarin ang mundo, na ako ang nagbibigay ng masamang imahe sa Pilipinas dahil hindi ako ang nagmura kay Obama at Ban Ki Moon,” De Lima said.<br /><br />(So please don't turn the world around, that I am the one giving the Philippines a bad image, because I was not the one who cursed Obama and Ban Ki Moon.)<br /><br />She urged the President’s allies to look clearly ahead of them and see who the real culprit is.<br /><br />The President, she said, should be called out by his circle for his “uncontrollable mouth.”<br /><br />“Minsan ay tanggalin naman ninyo ang mga tapaloda ng kabayo sa inyong mga mata at medyo punahin naman ninyo kahit konti ang walang kontrol na bunganga ng inyong Pangulong pinagtatanggol,” she said.<br /><br />(You better remove the horses' blinders on your eyes and criticize, even for a bit, the uncontrollable mouth of your protected President.)<br /><br />Even with her ouster as Senate justice committee chairperson, De Lima said Cayetano – one of Duterte’s staunchest allies in the Senate – could not expect the improvement of the country’s international image in an instant.<br /><br />If Cayetano still would insist on that, he must be “dreaming,” De Lima said.<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">
