<b>Senator Richard Gordon accused Senator Leila de Lima of hiding the fact that Senate witness Edgar Matobato has a standing kidnapping charge.<br /><br />Gordon, who chairs the Senate committee on justice and human rights, claimed that De Lima concealed Matobato's kidnapping charge.<br /><br />Matobato was tagged in the abduction of alleged terrorist Sali Makdum filed by his common-law wife.<br /><br />Senator Panfilo Lacson, who is vice chair of the committee, joined Gordon in grilling De Lima about the alleged material concealment.<br /><br />De Lima said she did not do it on purpose.<br /><br />"I only noticed it kani-kanina lang po when I was reviewing my notes," De Lima said.<br /><br />However, Senator Antonio Trillanes pointed out that Matobato has stated on record during his previous testimony that there was a kidnapping case filed against him.<br /><br />"They already made a judgment that Senator De Lima concealed some information. But when we reviewed the transcripts, twice it was mentioned by Mr,. Matobato that he had a case filed against him for the Sali Makdum abduction," Trillanes told ANC in a phone interview.<br /><br />"They realized that they got the accusations all wrong and they were too proud to admit it," he added.<br /><br />Trillanes said the senators started to rant about minor things when they realized that they were wrong.<br /><br />"When they got faced by the truth that there was no material concealment, they started splitting hairs and nitpick," Trillanes said.<br /><br />In a statement released by De Lima after walking out of the Senate hearing, the former Justice chief maintained that there was no material concealment since Matobato admitted being tagged in a kidnapping charge.<br /><br />"As early as Sept. 15 hearing, Senate witness Mr. Edgar Matobato admitted that a kidnapping with ransom case was filed to him by the NBI on the murder of Sali Makdum," De Lima said.<br /><br />"No material concealment of facts was done," she said.<br /><br />Trillanes, who maintained that De Lima did not commit any material concealment, said that truth shall come out regardless of the decision of the committee.<br /><br />"Regardless of the decision of the committee, of the members, the truth will always have its way of coming out. <b>MANILA, Philippines – Neophyte Senator Leila De Lima strongly denied owning millions and billions of pesos in her bank accounts, as she called her accuser and successor Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II and his men a “mafia of lies.”<br /><br />In response to Aguirre, De Lima said these allegedly questionable accounts are only fabricated to malign her.<br /><br /><i>“I have no millions or billions in my bank accounts. And I have no dummy accounts. Any alleged accounts that would be linked to me and my alleged drug links can only be fictitious,” De Lima told reporters in a text message.</i><br /><br />De Lima then slammed Aguirre for faking testimonies and evidence against her.<br /><br /><i>“Secretary Aquirre and his operators are a mafia of lies and intrigues, who go to bed with criminal convicts just to get their perjured testimonies,” she said.</i><br />It was Aguirre who said that the Anti Money Laundering Council has submitted bank documents allegedly showing that P500 million to P1 billion were transferred to De Lima’s accounts.<br /><br />Aguirre also earlier claimed that two former staff of De Lima testified against the senator and purportedly submitted bank deposit slips. The two, however, publicly denied it.<br /><br />Why allow Aguirre?<br /><br />De Lima also hit the House of Representaties for allowing Aguirre, a member of the executive, to lead a congressional inquiry.<br /><br />She questioned why Aguirre was allowed to examine the same witnesses he brought to the hearing. She pointed out such leeway was not granted to the Senate, when administration allies conducted <i>“uninhibited and grueling cross-examination” of witness Edgar Matobato.</i><br /><br />Matobato is a self-confessed hitman of the Davao Death Squad, who accused President Duterte of ordering killings when he was Davao City mayor.<br /><br /><i>“The House allows Aguirre to conduct the examination of his own witnesses, while in the Senate Matobato is subjected to uninhibited gruelling cross-examination, at times with misleading questions designed to confuse a Grade 1 dropout,” De Lima said</i>.<br /><br />De Lima is a subject of a House probe into the proliferation of illegal drugs in the national penitentiary. Also being investigated are several corporations, where some of the stockholders reportedly have connections to drug lords.<br />
<br />
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II told reporters on Friday, September 23, that the NBI had received from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) the bank records that the bureau requested.<br />
<br />
Aguirre met with AMLC officials on Thursday.<br />
<br />
He refused to name De Lima’s friends whose bank transactions are being investigated.<br />
<br />
“I’m not at liberty to say something about that because that is confidential. Under the AMLC rules, the report provided to us is just to help up dig deeper for evidence, and we can only reveal this if there is already a case filed in court,” the justice secretary said.<br />
<br />
Still, he said, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has sufficient evidence to file a case against the lady senator.<br />
<br />
The DOJ has accused De Lima of tolerating drug trading inside the New Bilibid Prison when she was justice secretary, because the drug lords allegedly delivered bribe money to her through her reported driver-boyfriend Ronnie Dayan.<br />
<br />
Convicts who testified in the congressional hearing on the proliferation of drugs in the national penitentiary claimed the bribe money they paid was for De Lima’s 2016 senatorial campaign.<br />
<br />
De Lima has denied all the allegations made by the DOJ chief and the witnesses.<br />
<br />
The first time Aguirre made the allegations on Thursday that she had millions, even billions, of pesos in her bank accounts, De Lima said: “Secretary Aquirre and his operators are a mafia of lies and intrigues, who go to bed with criminal convicts just to get their perjured testimonies.” <br />

<br />MANILA – After being ousted as chair of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, and facing a probe at the House, Senator Leila de Lima is now uncertain of her fate.<br /><br /><i>"I do not know where all of this will end for me," De Lima said in her privilege speech a day after her committee ouster.</i><br />She is facing an ethics complaint before the Senate, an election protest before the Senate electoral tribunal, and is the subject of investigations of the House and Justice department on the proliferation of illegal drugs at the national penitentiary.<br /><br />On top of all this, she is also subject to attacks from President Rodrigo Duterte during his public appearances.<br /><br />De Lima's ouster discourages opposition for fear of repercussions, said University of the Philippines Political Science Professor Ranjit Rye and De Lima's party mate, Ifugao Representative Teddy Baguilat.<br /><br /><i>"Technically she could have been expelled, but I don’t think the Senate would do something as unprecedented and go that far. It’s a chilling effect...if you go beyond bounds and attack the president in a particular way, this is what happens," Rye said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.</i><br /><br />In a separate interview, Baguilat said the swiftness of De Lima’s removal as head of the Senate justice committee provokes fear in people with opposing views.<br /><br /><i>"Kapag mayroon ka talagang paninindigan o paniniwala na di sang-ayon sa posisyon ng president, then baka maparusahan ka," he said, and added that this is not a good development as there are lawmakers who do not agree with the administration's stand on certain issues such as the lowering of the age of juvenile criminality, and imposition of the death penalty.</i><br /><br /><i>"But siyempre, ang aming expectation is 'pag nagcrack na ng whip ang administration, marami ang susunod sa posisyon," he said.</i><br /><br />Baguilat also reeled from the negative feedback received by administration critics.<br /><br /><i>"Ang napapansin ko, pag yung criticism is on the drug war, medyo matindi yung response, talagang iniipit gawa ng nangyari kay Senator De Lima," he said.</i><br /><br /><b>ENEMY OF THE STATE</b><br />Critics of the war on drugs are also painted as an enemy of the state or "yellow."<br /><br /><i>"Kung tutuusin, the Liberal Party (LP) has already aligned with this administration in both Houses. Ang official party is stand is that we are with the majority, so saan nanggagaling ito?" Baguilat said.</i><br /><br />It is a good thing that they are still free to talk about other issues such as charter change, the possible suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, or possible constitutional dictatorship, he said.<br /><br />However, Rye said that despite a chilling effect and the absence of a formal opposition party, the opposition is not dead.<br /><br /><i>"Is the opposition dead? In terms of an opposition party, it doesn't exist but in terms of people who criticize, there are still many."</i><br /><br />This, he said, is a consequence of the Philippines' weak party system.<br /><br /><i>"I would have hoped the LP as the only remaining coherent party in the senate would have taken a position as the opposition, but they decided to play a more constructive role in the majority," Rye said</i>.<div>

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Leila De Lima on Friday, September 23, called Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II “stupid” for apparently not seeing government's inconsistent moves in its fight against illegal drugs.<br /><br />De Lima was reacting to the House inquiries into her alleged role in the proliferation of illegal drugs in the New Bilibid Prison, the Philippines' national penitentiary in Muntinlupa, Metro Manila.<br /><br />She questioned why Aguirre was allowed to cross-examine the same witnesses, mostly drug convicts, that he brought to testify against her. <br /><br />“The House allows Aguirre to conduct the examination of his own witnesses, while in the Senate, Matobato is subjected to uninhibited, gruelling cross-examination, at times with misleading questions designed to confuse a Grade 1 dropout,” De Lima said in a text message to reporters.<br /><br />Edgar Motabato is the self-confessed hitman of the Davao Death Squad who accused President Rodrigo Duterte of ordering killings when he was Davao City mayor. <br /><br />It is ironic, De Lima said, that the Duterte administration is now partnering with drug lords in its drug war when it once accused them of plotting to kill the President.<br /><br /><i>“Kasi daw ang mga drug lord at criminal sa Bilibid ngayon ay kakampi na ng Pangulo sa kanyang giyera sa droga,” De Lima said. (Because now, drug lords and criminals inside Bilibid are allies of the President in his war against drugs.)</i><br /><br />De Lima was earlier ousted as chairperson of the Senate committee on justice and human rights looking into the spate of extrajudicial killings, days after she first presented Matobato as witness.<br /><br />Change of heart?<br /><br />De Lima slammed Aguirre and called his situation “laughable," as she pointed out the apparent flip-flopping of the Duterte administration in its campaign against illegal drugs.<br /><br /><i>"Napakalaki nilang mga tanga para hindi mapansin na nagkakabalubaluktot na ang kanilang mga sinasabi," she said.
