MANILA, Philippines – Senator Leila De Lima on Friday, September 23, called Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II “stupid” for apparently not seeing government's inconsistent moves in its fight against illegal drugs.<br /><br />De Lima was reacting to the House inquiries into her alleged role in the proliferation of illegal drugs in the New Bilibid Prison, the Philippines' national penitentiary in Muntinlupa, Metro Manila.<br /><br />She questioned why Aguirre was allowed to cross-examine the same witnesses, mostly drug convicts, that he brought to testify against her. <br /><br />“The House allows Aguirre to conduct the examination of his own witnesses, while in the Senate, Matobato is subjected to uninhibited, gruelling cross-examination, at times with misleading questions designed to confuse a Grade 1 dropout,” De Lima said in a text message to reporters.<br /><br />Edgar Motabato is the self-confessed hitman of the Davao Death Squad who accused President Rodrigo Duterte of ordering killings when he was Davao City mayor. <br /><br />It is ironic, De Lima said, that the Duterte administration is now partnering with drug lords in its drug war when it once accused them of plotting to kill the President.<br /><br /><i>“Kasi daw ang mga drug lord at criminal sa Bilibid ngayon ay kakampi na ng Pangulo sa kanyang giyera sa droga,” De Lima said. (Because now, drug lords and criminals inside Bilibid are allies of the President in his war against drugs.)</i><br /><br />De Lima was earlier ousted as chairperson of the Senate committee on justice and human rights looking into the spate of extrajudicial killings, days after she first presented Matobato as witness.<br /><br />Change of heart?<br /><br />De Lima slammed Aguirre and called his situation “laughable," as she pointed out the apparent flip-flopping of the Duterte administration in its campaign against illegal drugs.<br /><br /><i>"Napakalaki nilang mga tanga para hindi mapansin na nagkakabalubaluktot na ang kanilang mga sinasabi," she said. The syndicate responsible for establishing this lab might have thought that it would not be discovered since it is located at the foot of the mountain and is surrounded by piggeries and poultries,” he said.</span></div>

Twelve people have been killed daily in the drug war.<br /><br />A majority of 59% or 986 people were killed during police operations, while 33% or 559 were killed by unidentified assailants.<br />A total of 129 bodies (8%) were found away from the crime scene.<br /><br />Dela Rosa also dismissed criticisms of the war on drugs, and asserted that the PNP does what is needed to be done, and that he does not condone the use of excessive force.<br /><br />"Damned if you do, damned if you don't, 'di ba? Kung hindi kami kikilos, ano mangyayari sa ating bansa? (Damned if you do, damned if you don't, right? If we don’t act, what will happen to the country?)" he said.<br /><br />In a speech on Sunday, Duterte said the government would need another six months to solve the country's drug and crime problems. He had set a 6-month deadline or until end of December 2016 to fulfill his election promise.<br /><br />"Maybe just give me an extension of another six months. I did not have that idea that there were thousands of people in the drug business and worst is they are operated now by people in government," Duterte said during the presentation of freed Norwegian hostage Kjartan Sekkingstad to the media.</span><div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">In an operation that rattled a nation already used to scandalous tales of corruption, Philippine officials saw for themselves the lavish and sometimes, gaudy abodes of 19 inmates in the Maximum Security Compound of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa.<br /><br />During the operation, government authorities confiscated over P1 million in cash during body searches of 16 convicts.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Police also found a gamut of other things that are supposedly not allowed inside Bilibid: “shabu” and other illegal drugs, firearms, drug paraphernalia, firearms, flat screen TVs, sex toys, pornography, luxury items, and even a stripper bar and Jacuzzi spread. De Lima inspected the prison again on Friday, December 19.
